What is cable television?

Cable television is an information and entertainment system which provides an array of channels to a tv set using fibre optic cables. The signal from the fibre optic cable is fed into the tv’s internal tuner, providing households with non-stop entertainment, news and sports channels. The channel lineups of cable tv’s may vary according to the bundle or package you subscribe to, and you can add as many channels to your package or bundle as you want to as they are charged per channel. Channels vary in price according to the category they are in.

There are many cable tv brands to choose from, each with their own costs in terms of packages, bundles, pay-per-view, as well as new releases. There are currently roughly 60 million subscribers to cable tv in America alone, which only confirms its popularity. Cable tv is a reliable alternative to the newer streaming services and satellite tv, as it can operate without disruption, even in the most inclement weather.

There is no internet connection necessary for cable tv, which requires only the installation of a fibre optic cable. Fibre optic cabling is hard wearing and long lasting, and guarantees unlimited watching time. There is also no need for any form of aerial or antenna to watch programs on cable tv.  Another benefit is that you have everything in one place. There is no need to subscribe to multiple services to enjoy sports, news, educational and children’s television programs. Channels can share one broadcasting space without having to worry about separate transmitters, etc, which could push up the cost of cable television.

Some say that cable tv is dying a slow death because of the advancement of technology and the introduction of multiple streaming services and platforms on which to enjoy your favourite shows. But with the cost of subscriptions, internet data costs, as well as the installation of the internet in your home, cable tv is still more affordable and therefore more appealing to lower income households who want entertainment that will not cost them more than it needs to.

The Covid-19 pandemic saw a rise in the viewing numbers of cable tv because of lockdowns that saw cities almost completely shut down as people sheltered in place. While it glued many people to their screens watching news coverage and updates, others used their cable tv for entertainment for themselves and their families.

There is no doubt that cable tv will be here to stay. As less equipment is needed to install cable tv, there is less chance of any of the components breaking down and interrupting your service. As mentioned before, the reliability of cable tv, even in foul weather, outshines the rest of the alternatives, and the only factor that will interrupt the service is an unforeseen power cut.

With all the benefits of cable tv, you will be hard pressed to find a better alternative than this. Whether you are a binge-watcher or watch television in your spare time, there is always something to watch on cable tv.
